2025 Coffee Market Update

2025 Coffee Market Update

2025 Has been a year of turbulence for the coffee market around the world including poor harvests, shipping container shortages, geo-political discord, conflict, supply chain disruptions, and changes in supply and demand. This turbulence has caused a great fluctuation in the coffee market leading to price increases across the board and coffee being in the news more than ever lately.

With the turbulence in the market has also come uncertainty. This uncertainty is based on the factors listed above, and is most heavily based on speculation by traders in the coffee futures market, the global benchmark for Arabica coffee prices. The uncertainty of prices, availability, etc. of green (unroasted) coffee has hit hard especially for small coffee roasters such as ourselves. We have had to remain nimble and pivot where needed to ensure we can continue to source high quality specialty coffee.

We had previously announced that our Diagonal Espresso will be sold out temporarily due to the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the espresso blend components, we are not currently able to source coffee from that origin and will not be able to for the foreseeable future. We hope for peace for the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and look forward to a day where there is stability in the land for all people. The hope is that the coffee farmers of of the DR Congo will be able to export their delicious coffee again soon. In the meantime, we will work to find a replacement component that can stand up to steamed milk which is what we crafted the Diagonal Espresso blend to do.

In addition to the disruption of coffee from Democratic Republic of the Congo, there is a very good chance we will see disruptions in coffee from Brazil and Mexico very soon. Brazil is the world's largest exporter of coffee, so disruptions in coffee coming from Brazil will see a ripple effect throughout the market. Brazil has traditionally been a component in many coffee roasters espresso blends, so some coffee roasters have already begun to pivot from Brazil which means changes to the consistency of some espresso blends. Coffee from Mexico is also likely to see disruptions very soon.

As a small business, and a small coffee roaster, we are working to weather the storm of the market, and pivoting where needed. This means that we will need to look for replacement origins in our sourcing program to find replacements for origins that are facing disruptions in the supply chain. This also means that our customers may see some coffee varieties sold out from time to time due to all of the factors listed above. If one message has come through loud & clear from this year's Get To Know Your Customer Survey, it has been the appreciation from our customers of our focus on quality, and the attention to detail in sourcing and roasting our coffees. Our commitment to sourcing and roasting high quality specialty coffee remains as strong as ever, as we feel this is what sets our coffees apart. ☕
