Brewing methods for specialty coffee at home

Brewing methods for specialty coffee at home

A lot of people have said to me, that they just don’t have time to do a pour over in the morning and that’s ok, pour over is not the only method you can use to enjoy your specialty coffee.  I prefer a chemex pour over because it allows me to brew multiple cups of coffee at once while maintaining control over water quality, temperature and dispersement but, that’s just me.  There are other ways to enjoy your specialty coffee that take less time so you can slot it right into your morning ritual without compromising on the flavor.

Cold Brew

Since summer has just left and I don’t want to depress everyone too much, let’s get this one out of the way asap.  Although, I know there are some weirdos that drink cold coffee throughout the winter, it’s just…bizarre.  Making cold brew at home is so simple, coarsely grind your preferred coffee, pack it into the filter of your cold brew system (there are tons out there, you could even use a mason jar and a nut milk bag), add (cold) water and let steep for 18 hours. After that, remove the filter and there you have it, about 1.1 Liters of smooth brew right in your fridge.  Cold brew is one of the most simple brewing methods out there, in other words its hard to screw it up.

French Press

Coarsely Grind coffee, filter, add water, steep, pour.  Pretty simple, really.  The only tricky part is knowing how much the coffee to water ratio is for the size of French press that you have.  Your French press should come with instructions but if not, go here for guidelines.

Aeropress

This method comes with a scoop so measuring is super easy ;)  The aeropress provides an espresso like cup and brews a perfect single coffee.  It’s light weight, inexpensive, easy clean up and small enough to travel with.

Pods

They now have reusable pods that you can pack yourself! Ahhh!  Get yours here.  I use to be so against these devices because you know, climate change (do not get me started on “but the pods are recycleable”, just NO) but I understand how convenient they are which makes them so appealing.  Just like with filter coffee, you have to be sure your water reservoir is clean and bonus if you are using filtered water.

Filtered coffee

Had to include this one because, well, it’s one of the most common brewing methods used in America.  A couple hints to improve upon your morning cuppa with this method would be water quality and filter used.  You want to make sure your water reservoir is clean and that you are using water that has been filtered whether you have an at home reverse osmosis water filter or you buy a bottle of distilled water from the store, it makes a huge difference than just using tap water.  For filters you’ll want to buy non bleached organic bc, no chemicals to alter the flavor.

The ritual you establish for your morning sets the tone for your day.  Period. I think most would agree that planning on waking up and doing xy and z makes you feel much better than snoozing your alarm, over sleeping and then having to rush out the door, amiright?!  Taking the time and effort to brew and enjoy my coffee is one of the pillars of my morning ritual and really starts my day off right.

Tying in a ritual of self improvement with your already in place morning cuppa

Tying in a ritual of self improvement with your already in place morning cuppa

If you’ve been keeping up with our blogs or are following us on Instagram you know we’re a little into personal development.  Ok, fine, a lot. When we decided to start KAHA it was, at first, only a coffee roasting dream with little to no thought towards our mission or how we’d stand apart from the rest.  We’re figuring it out though!  By trying different things, networking, asking for help, lots of talking and heaps of trial and error.

Both of us have felt a pretty incredible shift over the past few years ever since we started working, very consciously, on improving ourselves through a variety of self help mediums.  The best find so far has been the BEST SELF Journal, hands down.  Starting our mornings and ending our days with gratitude, block scheduling our days, and recapping wins and losses, has been a serious game changer.  For more about that, see previous blog, Master the day.

So, we’ve been beating our brains for a while now, wanting to add that sort of personal development touch to our message and ultimately to our coffee so that we can improve the lives of our customers.  We decided to become affiliates with Best Self co to offer you a great product that’s the perfect compliment to improving your already established morning coffee ritual (if you drink coffee, you have a ritual, trust).  As soon as you smell that coffee-brewing let it be a cue to sit down and start your journal.  By weaving in the sense of smell as a trigger to start your self-care practice, you’re setting yourself up for a tuned in day.  Great start, right? We think so too!

We want to continue to deliver as many ways, tips, and tricks that have helped us survive and at times even thrive in this crazy world of adulting and entrepreneurship.  If you’ve tried the BSJ, let us know what you think, and tell us about your improvements

De-Funk yourself: possibly helpful ways to get out of a rut

De-Funk yourself: possibly helpful ways to get out of a rut

Not going to lie had a bit of a hard time trying to think of something to talk about this week.  Actually I had an idea and just couldn’t bring it to life. I’m sure I will later but for now…meh.  Anyone else ever get like that when the seasons start to shift? I feel…unsettled.

A lot of stuff is up in the air for me right now, mainly, my US visa. It’s set to renew all the paperwork is in and this time it should be for (hopefully) 10 years.  Then again, who knows, things happen and with the current administration, who knows anymore? I’m resting on my laurels a bit; scared to make any moves in fear I may not be allowed to live in this country soon.  My mind keeps going through “if, then” scenarios and I get a little frazzled. Some might call it being in a funk. I’m sure everything will turn out fine but you know how worry can be? All consuming sometimes.

Enough about my sob story though, this blog exists to uplift people and bring tangible ways to increase productivity and happiness (and also, coffee).  So, in lieu of whining for a few paragraphs, I’d like to share a few things I go to, in no particular order, to feel better and de-funkify:

  1.  Meditate – guided with an app (I like Insight Timer) is the only way I can do this, and admittedly sometimes I fall asleep but, I ALWAYS feel better, even if it’s marginal.
  1.  Read – Doesn’t matter what, just try to get out of your head and relax for at least 10 minutes.
  1.  Listen to a podcast.  I like Project Life Mastery Podcast because Stefan James is a young entrepreneur who has an obsession to improve himself in all areas of his life and works to help others do the same.
  1. Brain Dumping… actually sitting down and writing out long hand everything that is in your mind. Gets it all out on paper and you’re able to relax a bit more.
  1. Walk outside, preferably in the woods/beach – I don’t know why but I just feel different after being outside… better.  Nice little article on being in nature and the effects on our psyche.
  2. Do something nice for yourself.  I love to take myself out for a coffee if you haven't already guessed.  I was on 3-5 flat whites a day when I was living in Auckland - that's a lot of money at 4-5 nzd a pop and a lot of coffee (maybe too much? is that a thing?), but it was one thing that I truly looked forward to.

Now, I’m not perfect, I have been known to reach for food and/or alcohol to deal with funks like this, but, I’ll tell you, it’s not worth it.  You may feel better momentarily but in general, everything gets worse. You start to feel lower on energy because you’re making poorer choices and it just does no good. Once you can recognize and put a label on what’s bothering you or even just simply that something’s just not feeling right, you’re better equipped to deal with it in a more positive way.

Man, I hope no one else is in a funk because they are not fun(ky), but if you are, I hope this helps ☺

Kaha 1.0 : In the beginning there were pop-ups

Kaha 1.0 : In the beginning there were pop-ups
In hindsight I now realize that I just needed to start.  I didn’t need to know exactly where I was going, I just needed to do the next thing that felt right to me in my business and be ok with sometimes taking alternate routes or deviating from the “plan”.
