KAHA Coffee Roasters is excited to release our first ever Medium Roast Espresso!

We never specifically set out to have a light, medium, and two dark roast espresso offerings in our lineup, but through our tireless testing of coffees we stumbled upon one of the most flavorful and vibrant medium roast espressos we've ever tasted!

The best part is that this single origin Colombian sourced coffee bean was hiding in plain sight all along. While doing quality control testing & brewing of our best selling Happy Medium Colombian Huila medium roast coffee, we brewed it at a strong concentrate (see our blog article on the magic of bypass brewing) and had an epiphany... this tastes like it could be a GREAT espresso!

We went to work on pulling shots of this coffee on our Gaggia Classic Pro Espresso Machine. After testing with other origins as a blend (Brazil, Mexico, etc.), we found that this coffee shined its brightest as a single origin. The body, complexity, vibrancy, fruit-forward berry notes, and balance were spot on and we were amazed at how outstanding this coffee is as a medium roast espresso. We couldn't be happier with it, and we can't wait for you to try it!

**Dialing In for Espresso Machines - We started this espresso with a ratio of 1:2 (the 1 in the ratio is your dose of espresso in grams and the 2 in the ratio is the weight of the extracted liquid espresso in your cup or your yield) and aim for a 25-30 second shot time. We found that this medium roast can be similar grind size to some dark roasted espressos. This medium roast espresso is fairly user friendly and shouldn't require too much fine tuning to dial in.

**Dialing In for Stovetop Mokapot - We usually recommend grinding coarser than most people do for a stovetop mokapot brewer, around a medium grind size (drip coffee grind size) so that the coffee does not over extract giving a muddy or bitter cup. Due to the vibrancy of this coffee, for best results you will want to make sure it rests, or off-gasses, for at least 4 days otherwise the bloom may cause under extraction in a mokapot.

The Coffee:

Producer: Various small lot holders
Region: Colombia, Huila
Process: Washed
Varietal: Castillo, Caturra, Colombia
Roasting Profile: Espresso

Recommended Brew Methods: Commercial and Home Espresso Machines, Manual Espresso makers, Stovetop Mokapot, Aeropress,  Hario v60 Pour Over, Chemex Pour Over, Clever Brewer, Hario Switch.

How We Like To Drink It:  When it comes to the Horizontal medium roast espresso, we prefer it from a commercial or home espresso machine, or a stovetop mokapot as a straight shot, a Cortado, or as an Americano.

*Like other fruits, coffee is seasonal and we love that! Because of this seasonality, we will occasionally switch out a component for another coffee variety with very similar characteristics. By changing the components with the seasons, we are able to offer the most vibrant coffee flavors all year round, which also allows for importing the freshest green coffee possible.
